In December 2009 plans were put in place to make changes to the Spanish motorcycle licence. The plans consisted of a new classification, A2, changes to age limits and cylinder capacity. The changes are designed to bring Spain into line with other european countries.
Part one of the changes came into force on 8th December 2009 and part two will be introduced in September 2010.
The changes are as follows,
The age limits for two of the classifications have increased as follows, application for the AM or moped licence has been raised from 14 to 15 years and for class A from 18 to 20 years.
The new A2 classification has been introduced for 18 year olds and above. This will allow them to ride bikes with a horsepower limit of 47.5bhp. As in the UK it is possible to use a more powerful bike with an authorised restrictor kit fitted, however the original power of the bike must not exceed double the 47.5bhp limit ie 95bhp, so no R1´s with restrictor kits.
Anyone wanting to proceed to the A, or unlimited licence must now complete at least 2 years on an A2 licence and be over 20yrs of age.
The new classifications are as follows.
AM Licence (Moped) minimum age 15yrs.
A1, Licence (Motorcycle upto 125cc) minimum age 16yrs.
A2, Licence (Motorcycle of up to 47.5bhp) minimum age 18yrs.
A, Licence (Motorcycle unlimited power) minimum age 20yrs with at least 2 years at A2 level and having passed the relevant test.
The changes will not affect anyone who holds a current licence.
