Just over 7 weeks ago on the 18th of September my older brother Paul was involved in a serious motorcycle accident, he was very lucky to survive cartwheeling his Kawasaki ZX12R off the road and into a field. You can read the original article HERE and the piece by the local paper HERE.
I finally managed to see him at the six week mark with a quick trip back to the UK. His recovery is progressing well but he is still on morphine patches with codine and paracetamol tablets to take the edge off the pain, overnight is the worst as he wakes up in agony after a few hours of laying still. The 15 ribs that he broke are now well on their way to being healed and his 4 cracked vertebra also, however his legs are still a way off especially the left one as shown above.
He was moved at around 3 weeks from Hull Royal infermary to the local hospital in Scarborough which has made visiting much easier for family and friends who have rallied round to help.
Generally he is cheerful however his situation overwhelms him at times with the thought of a year with a cage on his leg and the rounds of physio to come. He was told by one of his specialists last week that if he had, had the accident 10 years ago he would have lost his left leg below the knee as it is in such a bad state, but that with the new treatment methods he should make a good recovery.
Paul´s right femur has been plated extensively as can be seen by the scar above, he has a similar scar on his left thigh where the bone has been pinned and the obvious lower left cage. Currently he is still unable to put any weight on either leg and will remain in hospital for the forseable future.
My brother´s friends have set up a gofundme page which has so far raised over 2000 pounds to help with his expenses over the coming year and all donations are welcome however large or small and have also organised a fundraising evening at The Londesborough Arms in Seamer near Scarborough on Sat 12th November with live music, a raffle and an auction with some great items on offer, more information to follow.
